OGS is a scientific internationally orientated institution, whose roots go back to the School of Astronomy and Navigation founded in Trieste by the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa in 1753.
It is a multidisciplinary research institute in the field of Earth Science, in accordance with its historical tradition of excellence and with its objective of spreading knowledge and scientific culture, OGS operates and develops its own mission in E.R.A. (the European Research Area) as well as at an international level with a particular focus on the basic and applied research fields such as

  • Oceanography (physics, chemistry and biology),
  • Geophysics and Marine geology,
  • Applied and exploration Geophysics,

It promotes and implements on a national and international scale with similar partners scientific and technological research with the aid of global oceanographic research vessels and of strategic infrastructures of excellence
