For five decades, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) has been a driving force behind global efforts to advance scientific expertise in the developing world. Founded in 1964 by the late Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam, ICTP seeks to accomplish its mandate by providing scientists from developing countries with the continuing education and skills that they need to enjoy long and productive careers. ICTP has been a major force in stemming the scientific brain drain from the developing world.

Each year, ICTP organizes more than 60 international conferences and workshops. Over the past five decades, more than 100,000 visitors from 170 countries have come to ICTP to discuss the latest findings in their fields.

ICTP is funded largely through a generous grant from the Italian government. The Centre also receives base financial support from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
